About Franz Schubert

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Franz Schubert was born in Vienna and spent almost his entire life there. At eleven, his gifts as a boy soprano earned him a place at the Stadtkonvikt, and he went on to study with Antonio Salieri. Yet it was among friends, poets, singers and fellow musicians, that he truly found his voice.

At seventeen he composed "Gretchen am Spinnrade", and in doing so gave the German Lied a new character: the piano became far more than accompaniment, evoking the turning of the spinning wheel and the quickening of a heartbeat. Such songs lay at the heart of the Schubertiades, the informal evenings where friends gathered to listen, sing and dance.

Schubert wrote well over a thousand works, among them more than 600 Lieder, symphonies, chamber music and piano pieces. Following a serious illness in 1822, his music acquired a deepening awareness of time's passing. The "Death and the Maiden" Quartet, the song cycle Winterreise and the String Quintet in C major show a composer who faces darkness with tenderness and an extraordinary melodic gift.

He died aged just 31. Much of his music came to light only after his death, and it remains as intimate and moving as ever.
