String orchestra | Norway | founded 2007

About Ensemble Allegria

Ensemble Allegria began in 2007, when a group of music students decided to form an orchestra purely for the joy of playing together, which is also what the Italian name suggests. It has grown into one of Norway’s most respected chamber orchestras, with a reputation for playing at a high level while staying lively and flexible. The musicians run the orchestra themselves, and Maria Angelika Carlsen is its artistic director.

The ensemble organises its own concert series, NÅ, in Oslo, and appears regularly at festivals such as the Bergen International Festival, the Hardanger Music Festival and Ultima. It was the first ensemble to win the Statoil Talent Award for classical music, in 2012. Soloists who have played with it include Tine Thing Helseth, Martin Fröst, Truls Mørk, Lawrence Power, Kathryn Stott and Benjamin Schmid.

Allegria has built a close partnership with the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir. Their recording of Bach’s motets received the Diapason d’Or de l’Année in 2018. Two of its albums have also been nominated for Spellemannprisen, the Norwegian Grammy.
