About Eyvind Alnæs

Eyvind Alnæs (1872-1932) grew up in Fredrikstad, in a family whose musical roots lay in the Ålesund region. His talent showed early, and he went on to study in Oslo with Iver Holter, in Leipzig with Carl Reinecke and later in Berlin. His Symphony in C minor appeared in 1897, and his Piano Concerto in D major, Op. 27, remains a cornerstone of the Norwegian concerto repertoire.

Alnæs wrote for the orchestra with the great Viennese symphonists in mind, but his songs have had the longest life. Around 1900, only Edvard Grieg and Agathe Backer Grøndahl rivalled him as a composer of Norwegian romances. Kirsten Flagstad and Feodor Chaliapin were among the singers who recorded his songs. His accompaniments demand a pianist who is a full partner to the singer, and romances such as “De hundrede violiner” and “Der du gjekk fyre” are still loved.

Alnæs was also one of the leading church musicians of his day. He served as organist in Drammen from 1895 to 1907, then at Uranienborg Church and finally at Vår Frelsers Kirke in Oslo. He also helped found the Norwegian Composers Association.
