NOVA
The CD recording «Nova» is a collection of beautiful choir music that highlights NOVA’s unique choral sound . For NOVA it was important to find a producer capable of capturing this uniqueness of expression away from the concert stage. The choice fell on producer Vegard Landaas, technician Thomas Wolden, and their recording company LAWO Classics. Vegard Landaas is an experienced musician with an ear for magical detail. Besides being one of Norway’s leading saxophonists, he has established himself as a highly regarded producer of classical recordings. In recent years he has collaborated with Thomas Wolden on a number of outstanding choral productions.
The music on this recording comprises a cross section of the repertoire of Kammerkoret NOVA over the past two years. It opens with the pieces «Water Night» and «Sleep» by the popular composer Eric Whitacre. The choir has also recorded Max Reger’s «Nachtlied» and Sergej Rakhmaninov’s «Bogoroditse Devo.» The composers Ola Gjeilo, Trond Kverno, and Francisco Guerrero are represented as well with their homages to the Virgin Mary. The recording features both sacred and secular works of Scandinavian composers, including Knut Nystedt, Alfred Janson, and Arne Mellnæs.

Lyrics
WATER NIGHT
Text: Octavio Paz, English version by Muriel Rukeyser
Night with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night,
night with eyes of water in the field asleep
is in your eyes, a horse that trembles,
is in your eyes of secret water.
Eyes of shadow-water,
eyes of well-water,
eyes of dream-water.
Silence and solitude,
two little animals moon-led
drink in your eyes,
drink in those waters.
If you open your eyes,
night opens doors of musk,
the secret kingdom of the water opens
flowing from the centre of the night.
And if you close your eyes,
a river fills you from within,
flows forward, darkens you:
night brings its wetness
to beaches in your soul.
Text: Octavio Paz
Lyrics
The evening hangs beneath the moon,
a silver thread on darkened dune.
With closing eyes and resting head,
I know that sleep is coming soon.
Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
a thousand pictures fill my head.
I cannot sleep, my mind's aflight,
and yet my limbs seem made of lead.
If there are noises in the night,
a frightening shadow, flickering light;
then I surrender unto sleep,
where clouds of dream give second sight.
What dreams may come, both dark and deep,
of flying wings and soaring leap
as I surrender unto sleep.
Max Reger (1873–1916)

Lyrics
Die Nacht ist kommen, drin wir ruhen sollen;
sei selbst unser Schutzherr!
send uns dein Engel.
Lass uns einschlafen mit guten Gedanken,
fröhlich aufwachen und von dir nicht wanken;
Text: Petrus Herbert
Night is upon us, bringing us to rest;
God bids all pious souls at his pleasure
to lie down with his care and blessing,
to rest and recover.
Drive, Lord, away from us every sinful spirit,
watch over our nightly sleep,
be our guardian lord!
Shield us, flesh and soul, under your wings,
send us your angel.
May we fall asleep with good thoughts in mind,
wake up joyful, and never stray from you;
may we strive to make our deeds and songs
give praise to you.

Lyrics
Благодатная Марие, Господь с Тобою;

Lyrics
Tota pulchra es, Maria,
et macula originalis non est in te.
Vestimentum tuum candidum quasi nix,
et facies tua sicut sol.
Tu gloria Jerusalem, tu laetitia Israel,
tu honorificentia populi nostri.

Trond H.F. Kverno (*1945)
Lyrics
Ave maris stella, Dei Mater alma,
atque semper virgo, felix caeli porta.
Sumens illud Ave Gabrielis ore,
funda nos in pace, mutans Hevae nomen.
Solve vincla reis, profer lumen caecis,
mala nostra pelle, bona cuncta posce.
Monstra te esse matrem,
sumat per te preces,
qui pro nobis natus, tulit esse tuus.
Virgo singularis, inter omnes mitis,
nos culpis solutos,
mites fac et castos.
Vitam praesta puram, iter para tutum,
ut videntes Jesum, semper collaetemur.
Sit laus Deo Patri, summo Christo decus,
Spiritui Sancto tribus honor unus. Amen.
Ave, gratia plena! Dominus tecum!
Benedicta tu in mulieribus!

Lyrics
Ave Virgo sanctissima,
Dei Mater piissima,
maris stella clarissima.
Salve, semper gloriosa,
margarita pretiosa,
sicut lilium formosa,
nitens, olens velut rosa.

Lyrics
Deus, qui illuminas omnem hominem
venientem in hunc mundum;
illumina, quaesumus, corda nostra
gratiae tuae splendore
ut digna ac placita maiestati
tuae cogitare semper,
et te sincere diligere valeamus.
Amen.

Lyrics
O crux splendidior cunctis astris,
mundo celebris,
hominibus multum amabilis,
sanctior universis.
Quae sola fuisti
digna portare talentum mundi.
Dulce lignum,
dulces clavos,
dulcia ferens pondera;
Salva praesentem catervam
in tuis hodie laudibus congregatam.
Text: Venantius Fortunatus
Alfred Janson (1937–2019)
Lyrics
Why is my verse so barren of new pride,
So far from variation or quick change?
Why with the time do I not glance aside
To new-found methods and to compounds strange?
Why write I still all one, ever the same,
And keep invention in a noted weed,
That every word doth almost tell my name,
Showing their birth and where they did proceed?
O, know, sweet love, I always write of you,
And you and love are still my argument;
So all my best is dressing old words new,
Spending again what is already spent.
For as the sun is daily new and old,
So is my love still telling what is told.

The voices are crystal-clear and distinct, yet blend together to form a whole that is beautiful and powerful. The dynamics are utilised to full effect, but never overdone, and there is a marvellous sense of control at the heart of the musical expression.Show original

They make a truly likeable impression, not least through the well-modulated vocal timbre that the conductor, Anne Karin Sundal, draws out of them.

The Nova Chamber Choir sounds very much like a fine string orchestra that has been given the gift of speech. Phrases seem to be deftly bowed; the spectrum of tone rich and varied; the blend, intonation, diction and sense of style, impeccable.
