Here is alluring worldly innocence and worshipful pursuit of optimal love. Helene Wold and Vegard Lund have played together for years. They have given concerts throughout Europe and have received a number of prizes for their performances. This is their first CD together. The music is from Vienna of the 1820s. The guitar used to accompany the songs is a Simon Ambridge, modeled after an 1830 Panormo guitar. With the release of "LIEDER MIT UND OHNE WORTE" Lawo Classics introduces two outstanding artists with newly discovered musical treasures now available to the listening public. Quite a number of important German composers were fascinated by the guitar’s intimacy and were inspired to use the instrument as song accompaniment and in chamber music. The guitar can be taken anywhere, can be played indoors and outdoors, and the softness of its sound never overshadows the singing voice, but creates instead an intimate mood which was appreciated by Early Romanticism. Some of the loveliest Lieder were written with guitar accompaniment, and they form the basis of this recording. The solo guitar pieces are free compositions based on Lieder or vocal music pieces from the same period. The music on this recording is characterized by the period’s appreciation of languorous romantic melodies, with or without words. Mendelsohn’s Lieder ohne Worte and Liszt’s virtuoso character pieces strongly influenced the style of a composer for the guitar such as Mertz. The immense enthusiasm for Italian opera during this era is also evident. In the wake of the Napoleonic wars, all social activity in Vienna was rigidly censored. Emperor Franz II was exceedingly wary of all voices of opposition and completely monitored all public gatherings. As a result, much of the intellectual and cultural activity moved to closed circles. Schubertiads and other house concerts provided a unique setting for the performance of Lieder. The music and texts could be cultivated free of obtrusive censorship and in the presence of attentive listeners. People were tired of war and wished to nurture social togetherness and family life in a new way. They sought to be together in perfect harmony, something later seen as a distinctive feature of the Biedermeier period. . . listen | buy | e-booklet LIEDER MIT UND OHNE WORTE Artists: Helene Wold – Soprano Vegard Lund – Guitar and Mandolin Release date: 15.02.2010 Duration: 62:24 Producer: Vegard Landaas Balance egineer: Thomas Wolden Location: Sofienberg Church, Oslo Catalogue no: LWC1011 EAN 7090020180113 e-booklet NORSK // ENGLISH
